News from the Missoula Cultural Council
With the summer months rapidly approaching the Garden City seems to be buzzing with activity. The farmers markets are in full swing, Out to Lunch and Downtown ToNight are set to start and The Bonner Park concert series is just around the corner. It's impossible to be bored during these months.
The Missoula Cultural Council wants you to mark your calenders for Wednesday, June 20th for The "Last Best Solstice Celebration" at the Missoula Winery. Enjoy food, wine, beer and music by Salsa Loca as we celebrate our first annual Summer Solstice party. Thirteen artists will also present day of "open air" work to be auctioned later that evening. The Brink Gallery
The Brink Gallery is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition "Landfall", by Jennifer Reifsneider.
Jennifer Reifsneider's sculptures and installations have been exhibited in over 40 solo and group exhibitions across the United States, including at the Torrance Art Museum and Pacific Design Center, Los Angeles, Cartin Gallery, West Hartford, Connecticut, and Basilico Fine Arts, New York. She has received several commissions, grants and awards, including a percent-for-art public project in Missoula, Montana in 2003. Her work is in private and public collections, including the Yellowstone Art Museum and The Museum of Modern Art / Franklin Furnace Artist Book collections. In 2010 she was the first artist-in-residence at Coastline Community College in Huntington Beach, California.
Montana Art and Framing presents Peter Keefer "Recent Works". The exhibition includes altered digital photographs, photo collage, and oil pastels with collage. These colorful works represent a creative surge exploring the abstraction of the landscape and urban structures. An opening reception will be held Friday, June 1, from 5-9 pm in the gallery at 709 Ronan Street in Missoula. Call 541-7100 for information.

House Design StudioHouse Design Studio presents Kim Anderson's Haiku series. For the Haiku series, I wanted to have fun with the poetry but also tie the images or feel of the painting to the overall message. I think of haikus as little sweet packages with a punchy zing at the end…kinda like how your Grandma was always so good at giving a small bit of advice that might not have really hit you until a few days later. I love this series because one of my greatest hopes for my work is that I can attempt to show a complex idea in a simple form.

On Friday, June 1st, the Montana Natural History Center will be pleased to present a First Friday Gallery Opening for a group show titled 'Nature Art by Young Artists'. Youth from Susie Graham and Jennifer Carlson's 4th grade classes at Chief Charlo Elementary and the YMCA's afterschool program will display their work. See beautifully rendered birds and plants of Moosecan Gully and imaginative art inspired by MNHC's specimens.

Will be doing a First Friday event to introduce out newest phase to Journeys
Photography. Light painting is offered now at the studio. Light Painting is done
with the use of flashlights and photography and allows you to paint a picture in
mid air with colored flashlights and capture your entire drawing where it is
then printed out to take home. This is a great activity for kids, teens and
adults. I have included a few jpg images of recent light painting done at the
studio.

The Rocky Mountain Map Gallery will be exhibiting original, color lithographic
prints of present day Montana from the monumental 1853-55 "Reports of
Explorations and Surveys to Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route
for a Railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean."
These early landscape views provide a striking visual record of the
grandeur and vastness of mid-nineteenth-century Montana and the people, both
native and newcomer, inhabiting the region during this period.
Opening reception from 5pm to 8:30pm Friday, June 1st. Showing through
June 30th.

Join Ecology Project International (EPI) at the Swift Center
for Conservation Education in celebrating the Swift Building’s 100th
birthday. Originally a meat packing warehouse built in 1912, the Swift Building
has seen many changes throughout its 100 year existence. It currently houses EPI
and 3 other conservation education organizations.
The birthday celebration begins at
5:00 pm and the featured artist is EPI’s very own Haley Hanson. Her
pieces are a series of wildlife photography on silk.
Local beer, wine, and light appetizers will be provided, and as a special treat,
delectable birthday cupcakes baked by Carly Waude will also be served!

one night exhibition of visual art based on the tradition of the Salon des Refusés, an ‘exhibition of rejects’ comprised of work refused entry into the
official 19th
century Paris Salons, this inclusive exhibition provides a survey of
contemporary artists in Montana. Some of
art history’s greatest and most influential artists, such as Édouard Manet and Claude Monet, participated in Refusés exhibitions. Far from being a
sour grapes protest by embittered artists, the Triennial
Refusés provides an important counterpoint to the
Missoula Art Museum’s Triennial, juried by Keith Wells, and creates the
opportunity for dialogue and positive institutional critique. Of the 160 artist who submitted work for
consideration, only 38 were selected. The Triennial Refusés exhibition celebrates the diversity of
Montana’s artists and the creative expression of the 122 artists who were not
accepted into the Triennial. Subversive, cheeky and fun, this exhibition
will incite and provoke! Frontier Space is
located in the alley, one block West of Higgins, between Pine and Spruce.
